Nike to join the metaverse?
Nike's recent job postings and trade applications indicate that it is preparing to enter the virtual world of the metaverse.
The world-famous footwear, apparel, equipment, and accessories manufacturing company, Nike, seems to be considering stepping into the realm of the metaverse. The company wishes to employ its logo and slogan "just do it" in the design of the virtual space.
There have been reports that Nike has recently filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its name "Nike" and "just do it" slogan as well as its swoosh logo so that it can use them in virtual products for multiple services that it provides, including entertainment businesses, retail shops, and "for use online and in online virtual worlds." Nike’s job postings and filings indicate that they have made up their mind to extend their company to the virtual world too.
Regarding the job position ad, Nike said that the potential candidates would "play a key role in redefining our digital world, ushering us into the metaverse.
"The new designer that would join Nike will be part of virtual material designer’s team in Nike’s Digital Product Creation group."
said Nike and also added that they need to participate to create virtual products such as footwear.
Nike joined the metaverse on Thursday before Facebook announced its rebranding to Meta. Meta aims at creating a virtual world to connect the physical world with online social experiences. The apparel company is running neck and neck with Meta Company in terms of proceeding with its plans along with Facebook (Meta). Nike has already engaged itself with NFTs and other digital assets, like tokenizing its CryptoKicks shoes on the Ethereum blockchain.
Having said that, Nike is not the one and only apparel company in the metaverse. RTFKT studio is a sneaker brand that has produced virtual as well as physical footwear. They were supported by several companies, including Galaxy Digital, Andreessen Horowitz, and others in a fundraising round worth $8 million last May.
